Video Production

A hands-on introduction to video-making with a goal to provide participants the basics of the creation of a promo video. Participants first explore how different hardware (DSLR, drones, iPhones + lenses, and stabilizers) can be used to capture a variety of shots and how each portrays a specific feeling. Students then work to create a b-roll of the Portland or Beaverton community in which they live and find compelling. Post-production instruction includes basic principles that can be applied to a variety of video-editing software. Finally, small teams of participants are paired with a community-based organization or small business to create a promo video. Those who complete this course will have full access to the equipment in the future and are eligible to join the Production Crew who can make money creating promo videos for the community.

Program Information

  • Practical Technique

Many video production classes are semester-long and focus on establishing theoretical techniques without a lot of application. We believe in flipping this paradigm and introducing new techniques throughout the production process. Participants work with cameras in hand from the first day and will have completed multiple projects by the end of the four workshops.

  • Equipment Exploration

Students spend time exploring different types of cameras, including DSLRs, iPhone accessories (stabilizers and lenses), drones as well as lighting and sound equipment. Once participants complete the course they will have full access to use the equipment independently and will be invited to participate in future single-day workshops.

  • Purpose Driven

After exploring different film and editing techniques, teams of students will be paired with a community organization to create a promo video. This mission-driven process provides an opportunity for students to incorporate the desired aesthetic and mission of the partner organization.

Get Involved

  • Participants

Due to COVID and the limitations of equipment, this is a small-group activity and space is limited. The series four workshops cost $100, but there are scholarships available (especially to POC and students with economic hardships). You do not need video production experience to take this class.

  • Donors

We would love your old equipment! Our goal is to have a library of used video, lighting, and sound equipment that students can check out. This also includes laptops and computers. All donations are considered in-kind donations and their value is tax-deductible as we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

  • Organizations

Are you a community-based organization or a local small business? We would love to create a small promo video for you. We help students work with the organization to understand your mission and desired aesthetic. In addition to a promo video, you will receive cross-promotion on our social media outlets.
